We (Diana Tiholaz and Solomon Mwije) are happy to launch Communitor’s first co-creation exercise! Get involved and let’s map together the community-based monitoring and citizen science initiatives!
We launch this exercise to use the power of our Communitor Network to map the community-based monitoring and citizen science (CMCS) initiatives in the Global South countries. If you know of any CMCS project, include it in this excel file. If you know more than one, you can fill them all in! And if you are not sure what exactly means a Citizen Science or Community-based Monitoring project, have a look to my blog post. It will take only five minutes on average to participate in this mapping exercise, but the benefits are immense. You will get familiar with important CMCS-related concepts. You will learn how to map the CMCS objectives, designs, degrees of citizens or communities’ participation, and main data users. Finally, you will contribute and have access to an interesting database about CMCS projects. Once the mapping is over, we will deepen the analysis to identify the different levels of success and main bottlenecks of these initiatives. The results and lessons learned will be shared with the entire community.
How to fill in the excel file
It is very easy to fill in a CMCS initiative in this excel file. The excel file has two sheets. You have to include the details about the initiative you know in the Mapping sheet. The Metadata sheet provides information about the criteria used to map the projects.
You will have to write your name and email address, project title, intervention's start and end year, country, field, a short description of the project, and the links to various online resources in the first seven fields. For the other fields, you will need to use the drop-down menus. If you are confused about any of the concepts or the classification levels, take a look at the Metadata sheet for quick guidance. For instance, you are not sure whether you understand correctly the accountability concept and what exactly the drop-down menu's levels mean. The Metadata sheet explains (1) what question you need to respond to, (2) what accountability means, and (3) the classification levels.
Join the exercise
This mapping exercise is a funny way to learn the most essential CMCS-related concepts and, at the same time, to contribute to building an interesting database about CMCS projects. Get involved! You will not regret it! If you still have questions, just contact us! Or email me directly at: diana.tiholaz@uantwerpen.be.
